Dry chemical powders (Class ABC) are monoammonium phosphate powders generally intended for multi-purpose use on Class A, B and C fires. These dry chemical powders come in 40% and 90% strengths. SAPS approved.
Uses:
Class A fires
It insulates Class A fires by melting at approximately 350-400°F.
Class A fires are caused by the combustion of common combustible materials, such as wood, paper, or trash.
Class B fires
The powder breaks the chain reaction of Class B fires by coating the surface to which it is applied.
Class B fires consist of a flammable liquid or gas including gasoline, oil, propane and natural gas.
Class C fires
It is safe and effective for Class C fires because it is non-conductive.
Class C fires deal with live electrical equipment and must be extinguished with equipment that will not deliver its energy to the user as would water. Electricity can also cause Class A and B fires.
Inappropriate uses
ABC dry chemical is not suitable for chlorine or oxidizing fires. The resulting chemical reaction can cause the chemicals to explode or collapse, releasing toxic gases. Water must be used. ABC dry chemical is unsuitable for some metal fires (Class-D) as well as cooking oil fires (Class-K). Due to the corrosive properties of the ABC Dry chemical, it is not recommended for use around aircraft or sensitive equipment.
